# Authentication vs. authorization
It's easier to just say "auth", instead of picking between "authentication" and "authorization". It's shorter. It's easier than picking a word. It avoids the effort of making sure to use the words correctly. It avoids using the words incorrectly.
- Authentication: Knowing who you are. Is it you?
- Authorization: Permission to do something. Are you allowed?
So, there's an important difference. The words have different meanings.
But for short, you can often just say, "auth", and let the word mean whatever makes sense in the context.
When someone says, "did you auth?", they could be saying "did you log in, and did you have the required access"?
